History

Green Gate Farms was founded in 2006 by Skip Connett and Erin Flynn in an underserved neighborhood of east Austin. They transformed the historic 1902 Bergstrom farmstead into a thriving community resource. In 2010, the farm expanded to include a 30-acre 'River Farm' located on Wilbarger Bend. Their mission focuses on creating organic farms and communities that nurture both land and people.

Practices

The farm is certified organic, adhering to stringent agricultural practices that avoid synthetic chemicals. They pride themselves on sustainable arrangements, using no floral foam or synthetic herbicides and pesticides. Flowers are freshly harvested, conditioned, and cooled to maintain quality. Green Gate Farms also champions farmland preservation and actively participates in policy advocacy.

Offerings

Green Gate Farms hosts a wealth of activities from September to June. Weekly Volunteer Days, a Saturday Farmers Market, and various classes, including Organic Flower Design and Floral Jewelry Making, invite community participation. Their Workshare program offers hands-on agricultural learning, with participants receiving mentorship and shares of produce or flowers.

Customers can purchase a variety of locally grown organic vegetables and flowers, designed in unique arrangements—each complete with recycled vases. The farm also offers a creative workshop experience, where visitors design floral crowns, guided by Farmer Erin.

Visiting and Purchasing

Located at 8254 Canoga Ave., Austin, Green Gate Farms opens its farm stand every Saturday from 9 AM to 12 PM. They conduct events throughout the year, driven by donations and fees, emphasizing community interaction and education. Reservations are necessary for certain classes to ensure personalized attention.

Beyond their produce and flowers, the farm serves as a hub for community gatherings. Events range from Farm Socials, Volunteer Days, to educational workshops.
