Birchgrove Farms has been cultivating Northern Ontario land since its founding, blending family heritage with modern environmental stewardship. Jason, raised on a farm and trained in agriculture, partners with Kit, whose early connection to sheep shaped their approach to livestock care. The farm’s environmental plan includes measures like fencing livestock away from waterways to preserve natural habitats.

Practices

The farm follows four core practices:

• Grass-fed beef and lamb raised without added hormones
• Animal welfare-focused care, using antibiotics only when necessary under veterinary guidance
• Environmental sustainability, including creek protection and land preservation
• Generational knowledge transfer, with three children actively involved in daily operations

Offerings

Lamb

Birchgrove’s lamb is raised seasonally, with ewes giving birth in spring and lambs finishing in fall. The meat is lean, flavorful, and versatile for stews, curries, or ground into tacos and chili. Orders must be placed by early summer for availability, as lamb is only processed during specific seasons.

Beef

Grass-fed beef is raised to 18–24 months, resulting in a lean cut suitable for various recipes. Whole, half, or quarter beef orders are accepted based on availability. All beef is processed locally and cut to buyer specifications.

Visiting and Buying

While the farm is located at 1997 Gordon Lake Road, Desbarats, ON, P0R 1E0, direct visits are not detailed in available sources.
