Meet the farm
Backer Farm Pastured Meats, Eggs, and Hay is a family-run farm that offers a variety of high-quality animal products, including meats and eggs, as well as hosting events and educational programs. The farm features activities like strawberry picking, goat yoga, and children's programs, making it a community hub for family fun and local produce. They emphasize a personable experience with a focus on fresh, locally-grown food.
Backer Farm began in 1927 when Richard and Jessie Backer purchased 37 acres in Mendham, New Jersey. The farm has evolved over generations, starting as a dairy operation in the 1920s, transitioning to horse boarding in the 1970s, and now focusing on regenerative, pasture-based meat and egg production. The current owners, Derick (Frederick T. Backer III) and Heather Backer, continue the family legacy, growing hay, raising pasture-fed livestock, and selling directly to consumers.
The farm prioritizes natural and ethical farming, with animals raised on regenerative pastures without hormones or antibiotics. Crops are grown using traditional methods, and the land is managed to support long-term soil health. The farm also maintains a horse boarding facility, a legacy from its earlier years, though the primary focus today is on meat, eggs, and hay production.
Backer Farm sells a range of products at its farmstand, including ground beef, beef patties, pork chops, chicken breasts, whole chickens, pastured eggs, bacon, tallow, and bone broth. All meats are raised on regenerative farmland, and eggs are sourced from free-range hens. Hay is also available for purchase, grown on the same land that has been farmed for nearly a century.
The farm is not an agri-tourism destination but a working operation. The farmstand is open Monday through Sunday from 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM. Visitors are welcome to browse the stand, though the rest of the farm is actively used for farming and horse boarding. The farm’s history is deeply rooted in the land, with buildings like the original dairy barn and creamery still standing as part of its heritage.
Orders can be placed via text (908-295-9810) or email ([email protected]). Large orders qualify for delivery, while smaller purchases can be picked up at the farmstand during open hours. The farm emphasizes direct-to-consumer sales, ensuring transparency and connection between buyers and the land where their food is raised.
