Westerly Packing Co is a meat packing business that specializes in traditional Italian cured meats, particularly known for their 'soupy'. They offer a variety of meats, including options from their on-site butcher and smokehouse, as well as a selection of prepared foods and groceries, making it a local landmark for authentic Italian flavors.
I love this place I don’t go here very often because it is an hour away from me, but I was in the area today with my mother from New York City Italian and I wanted to show her to store she loved it She really enjoyed the little figurines in the Melda store explaining her family just like that 😹 Oh also I have been eating their soupy for years and I finally got a soupy grinder. Wow very nice.
I grew up hopping the border of Pawcatuck, CT and Westerly, RI between my Irish-Italian family and friends. And 'soupy season' was always among my fondest memories when families and neighbors would have day-long parties grinding, mixing, and hanging racks as they bragged about who's recipe was better (but everyone secretly knew that Westerly Packing had the best) - that was 40+yrs ago. As an adult I moved around the country but could never find that "taste of home". I would order from various online stores with their stories of tradition and "REAL deal soupy" but constantly disappointed with wet, oily or lifeless 'store-like' soppressata sticks anyone could find at a grocery store. I would constantly have friends or family send me some sticks from back home. I eventually settled up north in Massachusetts and started a family -- taking my kids on regularly 2-hour "soupy runs' to Westerly Packing to stock up (an excuse to share local memories and reflections) and get our soupy fix. During COVID, we were able to order online from Westerly Packing and Bruno became a household invocation "Dad, we're out of soupy, can you call Bruno!". I rarely leave reviews or take the time to comment on businesses but as I placed another of my countless orders tonight, I felt compelled to rate and review Westerly packing and share this message... If you aren't local or didn't grow up exposed to the more Calabria Italian influenced traditions you probably do not know the difference between the generic product name soppressata and the authentic community crafted 'soupy'. There is simply no comparison in taste, texture and craftsmanship and Westerly Packing has the BEST traditional soupy there is (Sorry Uncle Frank). So whether your away from home or wondering what authentic soupy should taste like, this is the place to visit or order from. Their store in general is great and they have a ton of authentic imports and meats but the soupy alone is worth the trip or online order. In a world of uncertainty and fading traditions, I really hope this local landmark continues well into my grand children and great grandchildren's era! Thank you for keeping tradition alive!
OMG, I found Italian heaven on earth. Had a toasted Italian grinder (eaten in the parking lot and so full of quality meat) and brought home the spicy variety of Italian sausage that was pure delight (lean, not fatty), ...as well as other goodies. Their meat counter shines, as they butcher meat on-prem, have an on site smoke house, and surprisingly also provide a bring your own stock (cow/pig) butcher service. Already came back and bought more sausage for vacuum sealing and freezing for me and family. Never ever again for Dave's or Stop n Shop Italian sausage. Worth the 45 minute drive from Kent County.
A local mentioned this place to me and i decided I'd check it out for myself, Totally impressed will hands down recommend 10 out of 10 times!
Wonderful place if you need all types of meats, cooking ware, seasonings. They also have an amazing deli and bakery. And of course they have the mouth watering soupy.
Excellent butcher shop, great service. Their store made nitrate free bacon is awesome! Cooks and crisps up nicely and isn't overly salty. Nice smoked flavor
Excellent cuts of meat and wide variety to choose from. Can't list it all here! I ordered tomahawk ribeyes for Christmas, delicious! Also has a fine selection of prepared foods and groceries.
Great meat at reasonable prices, so far we have bought several nice thick porterhouse steaks (~1.6lbs each) and boneless pork ribs. Everything has been great.
All the good things you've heard about the soupy are an understatement, including this review. Honestly, words can't describe how good the sandwich I had was. The soupy is perfection. A little spicy, a little sweet, savory without being salty. The bread is fresh with perfect texture, crunchy outside soft and slightly spongy inside. The arugula balances the spice of the soupy with its fresh herbaceous flavor. It really is something you have to try for yourself.
It's a supermarket and a meat packing place. They have a bunch of cured meats for sale and some hyper local varieties, Soupy. The place is staffed with a mix of kids and old timers, all are cheerful and helpful. I stopped in on a road trip and grabbed way to much stuff, so be warned, it's hard to leave empty handed when everything looks so good.
