On August 2, 2025, I had the honor to visit Thomas Farm & Dairy with my friend Amenda, who is a famous goat breeder in Otterbein, Indiana, if you haven’t known her. My wife knows her from their time studying for their master’s degrees at Purdue University. The size of Thomas Farm & Dairy was huge. There are pastures growing fresh grass and hay specifically for the goats, along with neatly divided barn areas for different ages and breeds. The young kids are housed together in playful “kindergarten” pens, like the one in the photo above, where they bounce around energetically. Older does and milking goats have their own separate quarters. What’s unique about this farm is the close attention each goat receives—many are even called by name. Laurie and Jim, the owners, not only raise Nubian goats but also maintain a small herd of Jersey and Brown Swiss cows. The animals are well cared for, with a strong emphasis on humane treatment, clean housing, and plenty of fresh air and sunshine. In addition, there is a small self-service farm store in front of the farm where neighbors come to buy fresh produce, eggs, handmade goat and cow cheeses, flowers, and even locally sourced milk and ice cream. The store operates on the honor system—open 24/7—which says a lot about the level of trust and community spirit in Sunderland. Whether you’re grabbing a tub of award-winning chevre or a bouquet of zinnias, the experience feels personal and genuine. I really appreciate that places like Thomas Farm & Dairy continue to exist and thrive. They represent more than just agriculture—they are living examples of how sustainable, compassionate farming can serve both the land and the people. With growing awareness of food origins and animal welfare, this farm plays a vital role in setting a high standard for ethical dairying. It’s not just important for the local community—it’s a model that more farms across the country could look to for inspiration.

Beautiful farm and the kindest folks. We loved our visit here with the goats! Laurie and Jim are simply the best! The cheese was fantastic, too! Highly recommend anything they offer!

The owners couldn't have been more hospitable! Had our order (we phoned ahead) all ready to go. Invited us in to meet the bevy of goats, who were adorable and loving the chance for scratches and pets! What a wonderful and charming experience. The little store by the roadside packs a lot into its little footprint - milk, cheeses, potatoes, onions, ... I could go on!. But wait until you see the size of those whoopie pies! How refreshing to find such a treasure.
