Brook Ridge Farm has been raising purebred Border Leicester sheep since 1998, located west of Antigonish, Nova Scotia. Known for their docile temperament and high-quality wool, they offer breeding stock, market lambs, and sustainable products like 100% wool fertilizer pellets. Their farm also sells lamb pot pies and handmade shepherds’ blend barrier cream, emphasizing eco-friendly practices and a connection to local food systems.
Established in 1998 by Ian and Rhonda McCarron, Brook Ridge Farm began with one ewe and her twin lambs. Over time, the farm expanded its focus to purebred Border Leicester sheep, a breed developed in the 18th century by crossing Leicesters with Teeswater ewes. The McCarrons now breed Romanovs with Border Leicesters to create an F1 cross known as 'White Russians,' which are used for market lambs through the Northumberland Lamb Co-operative.
The farm prioritizes sustainable and renewable practices, including the production of 100% wool natural fertilizer pellets that enrich soil with nutrients like calcium and magnesium. Pasture management and cross-breeding programs are central to their operations, ensuring high-quality wool for handspinners and robust lamb production. Sheep are fed a diet of good quality hay and pasture, with grain added pre- and post-partum to ewes.
Brook Ridge Farm sells purebred Border Leicester sheep for breeding, showing, or commercial purposes. They also offer fresh frozen lamb year-round, available at the Antigonish Farmers’ Market and by special order. Additional products include handmade lamb pot pies, shepherds’ blend barrier cream (made with lanolin and beeswax), and 100% wool fertilizer pellets. All items are produced using locally sourced ingredients and eco-friendly methods.
The farm participates in the Antigonish Farmers’ Market, where fresh frozen lamb and pot pies are available. Customers can contact Brook Ridge Farm directly for details on purchasing lamb, fertilizer pellets, or other products. The farm also ships wool products to MacAusland’s Woolen Mills in PEI.
In 2019, Brook Ridge Farm was awarded Producer of the Year by the Sheep Producers Association of Nova Scotia. The farm is also certified under The Canadian Verified Sheep Program (CVSP), reflecting its commitment to sustainable and ethical practices.
